Parkinson's Self Assessment Tool
The Parkinson’s Self Assessment Tool was designed by The Cure Parkinson’s Trust (CPT) and involved patients in the design and development of the Tool.
“The idea behind it is simple,” says Tom Isaacs, co-founder and President of CPT, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s over 15 years ago. “By people becoming more aware of their health, they become more interested and engaged in their condition. This, in turn, leads to a greater sense of control over your life which is a fundamental ingredient to being able to cope effectively with Parkinson's."
The Tool is designed to enable individuals to gain a better sense of the overall pattern of their Parkinson’s and how it affects day to day life. Using the Tool is very straightforward. Each participant is asked to identify an activity that they do every day and monitor it for up to two weeks leading up to their next appointment with their healthcare professional. Alongside that, they are asked to record any comments about sleep, mood, diet and medication. Once completed, the Tool provides a snapshot of the changeability of Parkinson’s and some of the factors that might influence that change.
The Pilot study has produced fascinating findings, so a huge thank you to all those who took part and the wonderful teams in Plymouth and Southampton for facilitating this study. As a result we have made some minor changes to the Tool, incorporating a simplified section on medication and including real examples of activities assessed.
The Tool is now available online click here .
A Parkinson’s Self Assessment Tool-kit will be available for Healthcare Professionals by the end of October. To register, please email helen@cureparkinsons.org.uk
