Researchers at the Institute of Neurology of University College London have recently published a new study in which they have validated a mobile version of the BRadykinesia Akinesia INcoordination (BRAIN) test.

The BRAIN test is a freely available, online keyboard finger-tapping test that is based on the alternate finger-tapping task. It has been proposed for use in assessing upper limb motor dysfunction in Parkinson's.

Previously, these researchers have demonstrated that this test can be effectively used to differentiate between people with and without Parkinson's as well as monitor the upper limb motor features of the condition over time in a clinical setting. This new study sought to evaluate new parameters of the test and assess the test on smartphones and tablet devices.

The results suggest all of the BRAIN test parameters differentiated between ON and OFF medication states in people with Parkinson's. In addition, the researchers found that the test can differentiate between individuals with and without Parkinson's, regardless of the device used to conduct the assessment.

Many of the participants in this study were enrolled in The Cure Parkinson's Trust supported Exenatide clinical trial, and such tests could be extremely useful for monitoring individuals in future clinical trials. The real hope of this kind of technology will make it easier to continually evaluate individuals with Parkinson's over time rather than solely during an annual clinical assessment.
