From the 7 September mother and son duo Nichola and Joe (pictured above) took on the iconic Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle as part of the Deloitte Ride Across Britain challenge, camping along the way as they pedalled through 27 counties across England, Wales and Scotland over nine days. The pair took on this challenge in support of The Cure Parkinson’s Trust (CPT) and Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Setting off from Land’s End, Nichola and Joe began the challenge cycling through the stunning counties of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset. After 5 days on the move, 867km done and 29,527 feet climbed (the equivalent of cycling over Ben Nevis nearly 7 times!) the pair had cycled through Wales and made it to the half way point at Carlisle in Cumbria.

Day 6 saw Nichola and Joe cross the border into Scotland. The forecast had been good, but the weather defied all reports. For the whole day they cycled in heavy rain and were unable to enjoy the beautiful Scottish scenery cycling head down against the rain finishing the day in Shropshire. Joe said:

“It was most certainly our lowest point. Mum was so cold she struggled to change gears, she even wanted hills to warm up!! Eventually we made it to Edinburgh, where after 10 hours on the road the sun came out to greet us.

The last day of the challenge saw us cross the forth bridge at sunrise, which was majestic. We began our climb into the Cairngorms and the sunshine on the hills helped immensely, it really was just stunning. After the first pit stop the tempo of climbing increased, with us eventually reaching the summit at Glenshee. A brilliant feeling. The rest of the day saw us wind through Glens and along rivers. We were both delighted to have safely completed the challenge in support of CPT and Alzheimer’s Research UK. It was a big adventure, with many ups and downs, and when the legs were tired a reminder of the great causes helped a lot!”

CPT would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to Nichola and Joe for their brilliant fundraising efforts and support. The pair have raised over £12,000 for CPT and Alzheimer’s Research UK.
