The Grand Garden Fete On Sunday 11th August supporters Lizzy Pope and Sue O’Reilly held a wonderful Grand Garden Fete in Lizzy’s beautiful garden in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire in support of The Cure Parkinson’s Trust (CPT). Family, friends and neighbours joined the pair for a delicious afternoon tea and a host of activities including outdoor games, 'live' entertainment including a bluegrass band, tai chi and salsa lessons and a brilliant ‘find the cure’ raffle, as Lizzy explains: “Last Spring we decided to fundraise for CPT supporting their International Linked Clinical Trials Programme. Equipped with paint brushes and a sewing machine, myself and Sue with our husbands Ian and John (pictured below) began the preparations for our Grand Garden Fete. We spent a memorable Sunday painting flower pots to sell and came up with the idea of a ‘Find The Cure Raffle’ which friends and local businesses donated unbelievably generous gifts to. As the day drew nearer the little piles of tombola prizes and stock for our book stall grew exponentially. The quizzes were written, the outdoor games made and a full programme of entertainment was booked. What could possibly go wrong? A force eight gale on the Saturday as we tried to set up the many stalls and gazebos! Luckily our garden has a bar and afternoon tea kitchen in situ so, equipped with a few signs; a van load of furniture; an early start and two large families, the show went on and what a show! Supported by our friends in the Aylesbury branch of PUK we exceeded all targets for raffle and event sales - Colin Smith sold an incredible £725 worth of raffle tickets! All together the fete raised over £6,800 for CPT. The ‘count the hats’ game proved a great favourite on the day as staff donned a fancy topper with the lucky winner receiving an intriguing bag of Mad Hatter gifts. The story does not end there. Our new found Ebay presence has already contributed to The Grand Fete total and we will continue to support CPT’s work to find the cure.” The Cure Parkinson’s Trust would like to say a huge thank you to Sue, Lizzy and their families for their wonderful support in organising such a fun-filled event and to everyone who attended and generously supported their efforts.
